Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

Got a letter from HMRC?
Start with good records.

Quarterly updates are rolling out to more sole traders and landlords each April. Holm keeps the digital records you'll need, and tells you plainly when your turn comes.

[PH] Filing status Holm is not yet recognised for MTD Income Tax filing. Don't imply filing until HMRC access is granted (see HMRC credentials research, 10 Oct).

When does it apply to me?

Your qualifying income (self-employment + property, before expenses) in the tax year two years earlier.

From 6 April 2027

You'll likely need to send quarterly updates from the 2027–28 tax year. Start keeping digital records now and the switch is a non-event.

The short answer: MTD for Income Tax applies by qualifying income (self-employment plus property, before expenses):

  • Over £50,000: from 6 April 2026
  • Over £30,000: from 6 April 2027
  • Over £20,000: from 6 April 2028
  • £20,000 or less: no start date published yet

Thresholds per HMRC's published rollout. [PH] verify against rules register
