Guides for UK small-business finances

Short answers first. Holm Labs Limited writes these for owners and bookkeepers. They are information, not advice, and several figures still need a rules check. [PH]

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

HMRC is rolling out quarterly updates by qualifying income from self-employment and property, before expenses. Over £50,000 from 6 April 2026, over £30,000 from 6 April 2027, over £20,000 from 6 April 2028. At £20,000 or below, no start date is published here. Holm keeps digital records. It does not file this for you. [PH] verify the bands

Payments on account

For many sole traders, 31 January is last year’s balance plus a first payment on account for the new year, each payment on account being half of the previous bill when the bill is £1,000 or more. 31 July is the second half. This is the standard rule used in the planner, not a personal calculation. [PH] rules register
